Memorial
Sadly, Grace Darling died at the tender age of 26 on the 20th October 1842 from Tuberculous. Her sister notes that she 'went like snow' and faced death as a true heroine.
By the 1840’s there was two permanent memorials to Grace Darling in Northumbria, as she not only became a local heroine but a national one. This recognition after her death clearly shows how she touched the nation, not only as a heroine but as an ordinary woman.
Over the next several decades the statue shown in this photo, began falling apart. It underwent numerous restorations, notably one in 1885.
